It wasn't her sister. She just told the maid that, so the maid wouldn't think she was weird. It's in the movie. They were lovers. In the movie and in real life.

Yes, they were sisters, and while Virginia Woolf's affairs with women are clearly documented, her relationship to her sister Vanessa is sometimes described with ambiguous remarks. That being said, my mum wasn't surprised at all by the kiss in the movie. Having read several books about Woolf, she told me: "Oh yeah, they had this very special, close relationship."

Didn't Woolf had a intimate relationship with someone called Vanessa Bell-Something? Anyways, when Nicole talks about Woolf's sexuality in an interview (which I had replaced somewhere) she said after reading bios about her she had decided what Woolf's sexual prefrence was but Nicole wished not to talk about it. To me it kinds implies that she didn't wanna go all "I think she was a lesbian and her marriage with her husband was just really close friendship" cause then she would have to reveal why she thought so... I mean, why refuse to talk about it??

In ‘The Hours’, Woolf’s turmoil stems from her sense of being trapped – not by mental illness as such, but by the surburban prison described by the doctors to fend of her suicidal episodes. ‘She wants to go back to London because she wants to be a part of life, because it’s what feeds her creativity, feeds her soul, yet it’s also the thing that destroys her.’ Things come to a head after a visit from Virginia’s sister Vanessa (played by Miranda Richardson), who represents everything Virginia longs for. In a key scene, Virginia kisses her passionately – one of the three aggressive kisses in the film, one in each segment, that have caused no end of trouble for the actresses involved. ‘That threw so many people,’ says Kidman warily when it’s mentioned. She’s taken aback when I proceed to theorise that Virginia is symbolically embracing life. ‘Yes!’ She cries, as if I’m the first person to work this out. ‘There you go!’ What she was expecting, perhaps, was the dreaded lesbian question. After all, rumours about Kidman’s sexuality were once all the rage among celebrity murk-rakers. Denying them has presumably been a perennial chore; so you do wonder if she’s aware of what she’s doing when she says, of her working relationship with Richardson: ‘We were very tactile – I was always touching her or holding her, or lying on her….I would lie all over her, and touch her, and hold on to her hand, and stroke her skin…..’ Guileless candour or pure mischief? She talks delighted about finding the “slightly wicked’ side of Virginia, her ‘mischievous quality’. In fact, the Woolf she portrays is positively flirtatious. ‘That’s so funny you should say that!’ Kidman beams. ‘Because in Stephen’s initial note to me, he said that I should “intellectually flirt”. Not sexually flirt, intellectually flirt, and I loved that. That was the key. It was like okay, all right, I understand that. That’s something I can grasp!’ No kidding. Flirting is like default setting for Kidman; she’s doing it right now in a way, probably without even realising it. And finally I work out what’s so interesting about her performance in ‘The Hours’. It’s not the way the nose, the voice, the ink-stained fingers all bring out the bluestocking Virginia Woolf lurking within Nicole Kidman. No: it’s that, against all odds, she’s revealed the red-blooded Nicole Kidman lurking within Virginia Woolf. TimeOut London (UK) - 'Don't let anyone break your spirit' 22 Jan 2003

And while much has been made of her on-screen kiss with Richardson (which carries with enough rage, desperation, and passion to rival brothers Michael and Fredo’s in The Godfather part II), Kidman says it was key to understanding her character: “[During rehearsals] I’d hold Miranda’s hand and lie on her an stroke her skin, but you need that to create the sisters, because there was such a union,” Kidman says. “I’m always baffled when people say, ‘Explain the kiss.’ Isn’t that obvious? The kiss is her trying to suck the life out of Vanessa; she’s so desperate for her to stay.” Entertainment Weekly - The Woolf Woman 10 Jan 2003

Nicole actually mentioned Naomi in an interview today! "Kidman is not one to disavow her roots. She receives strong family support from her sister, mother and father, and she has maintained close friendships with people she has known most of her life. "I've got friends that I've known since I was born, and we look at each other and go, 'Can you believe we're still here?' I'm still very close to my next-door neighbour whom I've known since I was three, and my sister Antonia is my other half, and I have a number of girlfriends. "Naomi Watts and I are very, very good friends and have maintained that through so many things. I think that's really rare, particularly for actresses, and I take a lot of pride in that."

Thanks for setting the record straight, R525. You know, though, it would be more believable if you could gather together some kind of evidence for your case. I'd love to see it. That's hilarious, R524!! She really is lucky.

Find an article or something where they're talking about it. What's the extent of your research to back your statement? All you did was identify one of the two sides to this discussion and that already happened back on the first page. I mean, what's the difference between you saying what you said and me saying, "They're together for sure. I know they are. It's sexual." Don't get me wrong, I'd love to believe you, but why should I? Who are you?

What Miranda had to say about the kiss: "DE: What did the kiss between Vanessa and Virginia mean to you? MR: That Vanessa could never provide Virginia with all she needs. It could never be enough. In fact it kind of pushes her away. There's nothing she could do and it's incredibly sad. DE: Was there a lesbian undercurrent to that? MR: No. DE: Does that relieve you? MR: No. I'm amused. DE: Is there a danger people will think that? MR: You can't please all the people all the time. People may think that. ....... DE: Did you and Nicole get to know one another? MR: No, we didn't, and that is one of my regrets. It's frustrating. I was only there for eight days. DE: Was there much rehearsal? MR: They must have used all that up by the time they got to us."

She's _really_ close with her sister which I think makes her more relaxed and at ease with being initimate with other females. NK always refers to her girlfriends and how important they are to her. She's a girl's girl. w/her sister, who totally resembles their mother in comparence to Nicole.
