They met for the first time when they were 14/15 (so 1982 or so, about 23 years ago) at a swimsuit audition and shared a taxi home. (Naomi is no longer amused talking about that btw, hehe) And yeah, they made Flirting in 1991, where they were supposed to have gotten to know each other better. But if Naomi couldn't even call Nicole without a go-between in 92, how close can they have been back then really.

I'm assuming that's how they got closer. I suppose they were still acquainted in the early 90's, and only became closer when Naomi moved to the States and became a part of Nicole's life. So I guess we have to thank Becca for giving them that little push.

Do we really believe this Nicole and Naomi thing or is it becoming a DL running joke now? I'd love it to be true but it's not up there in the 'Kristen Davis-definitely in the girl gang league.'

Well, I personally admire their relationship and believe they do have strong feelings for each other. Unfortunetely, while I want to believe, I don't think they are an item. Probably were at some point, but that's irrelevant. The fact is that there are feelings involved, and their relatiomship is something unique. We use that as a base for speculation. It is not a DL thing, believe me. People talk about it overseas. They talk about it where I live. It's pretty amazing.

Well, it's *possible* that they are/were a couple, but yeah, it is all speculation at this point. I don't know if anyone actually believes it *for sure*; there's a surprising lack of tinhattery in this thread. But with those pics, it's kind of hard not to speculate. On the other hand I am becoming quite convinced that Nicole is not straight, but given the circumstances that's not really a revelation (circumstances being Tom Cruise). Naomi, it's much harder to say.

What q665 said. Regardless of what these two share, I'm convinced these two are anything but heterossexuals. If they consider themselves straight, then, hey, so do I.

I'm not sure any of us believe it for sure. I personally don't. But I *do* admire their relationship (that's why most of us are here) and honestly believe they'd make the most adorable couple to ever grace Hollywood.

For me it's definitely more wishful thinking than actually thinking they ever were a couple. The only "proof" would be those pics at The Ring premiere where Nicole walked the carpet with Naomi & Heath, looking like some strange threesome. Before I saw those pics I just thought they were close friends and that was that. Anyhoo, I find it more amusing to discuss their sexual preferences. 'Cause I have no life.

I totally agree. I do think that a base like "Well... it COULD be" is really reasonable. It's speculation, and that's actually why the DL exists. While we're indeed juggling with the strained 'wishful thinking' you must also consider that, if it were totally implausible, we wouldn't be heading for R700. I'm very pleased (and a little surprised) to see so many well-mannered and relaxed posters on this thread. It's a real treat.

OK, so umm, back on topic I guess, heh. I scoured this David Lynch site for quotes from Naomi. I'll just paste all of them below. "Her first casting call was for a commercial. "There were three of us girls, she remembers with a giggle, "who had to sit around all day in our swimsuits, waiting for the advertisers to decide which of us they wanted." One of those other girls was Nicole Kidman, and the two formed a bond that lasts to this day. "It's always been about strong women in my family," Watts says. "My mom has three sisters, and they really run their families. I'm very close to my girlfriends, very loyal, and I'm drawn to strong-willed women. I've had boyfriends who, honestly, couldn't handle it."

"Which brings up your tight friendship with Nicole. It's been discussed so much that I think we should give the two of you and the readers a fresh approach by not rerunning the same famous story of how you met. Clearly, you still adore and support each other to this day, but it seems like in Australia, it's a very small community of actors and eventually everyone knows everyone else. Nw: Yes. It feels very intimate when you compare it with America. And if you didn't know each other back there, you tend to find each other over here. In fact, a lot of the Australian friends I have now are relationships that I've formed in this country. Because you crave that connection with like-minded people."

Movieline breakthrough awards: "Once Kidman jumped up on the stage, it was clear why she wouldn't dream of missing the event-her best friend since her teens, Naomi Watts, was being honored for her brave and stunning performance in David Lynch's characteristically offbeat, critically acclaimed drama Mulholland Drive. Kidman, dressed in creamy, dreamy caramel, didn't hold back when describing her very close relationship with Watts, which included how they met at a modeling call in Australia (neither got the gig) and covered the highs and lows they've seen each other through since (among the latter: losing roles to other actresses, breakups with boyfriends, a divorce). The megastar nearly fought back tears as she revealed her pride at seeing her dear friend finally receive the accolades she has long deserved. Clearly moved by Kidman's remarks, Watts graciously thanked nearly everyone in the room, including a beaming Lynch, who was joined in the audience by such other Industry forces as Phoenix Pictures chief Mike Medavoy, writer-director Chris Weitz (Antz, American Pie) and CAA agent Rick Nicita. When Watts was finished, she and Kidman were informed that, unlike at most award ceremonies, there was still more giving to do, and they were presented with elegant new bracelets from jeweler Roberto Coin."

According to good ol' imdb: "The DVD and VHS versions of the film were self-censored by Lynch for sexual content. He had an additional blurring effect added to Laura Harring's crotch in the scene where she climbs into bed with Naomi Watts. The blurring was requested by David Lynch himself because he disapproved of nude pictures of Harring being distributed on the Internet."
